Healthy eating tips

11 November 2009

Hey Rioters!

Today it seems that all anyone can talk about is losing weight and being healthy, and how they are going to do that, and what they are not going to eat to get there. Hey, we all want to look good for the holidays, but I feel like malnutrition and diet pills are not going to help us get there.

Just the other day I heard a girl say she was going to not eat all day so she would fit into her dress for her big party that night. The fact is, that doesn’t work. By starving yourself, you will end up with a slower metabolism and a bloated belly. The best thing to do, is to eat.

Hold on though, before you go headed for that cold pizza in the fridge that I know is driving you crazy, you have to know what to eat. Healthy eating is fairly simple, the trick is in knowing what you like to eat and what it will do for your body.

Basically, there’s four food groups. That’s old news. And the amount from each food group that you are supposed to put into your body varies depending on your age, size, gender, etc. And you can find out how much you should be eating in a little book called, “Canada’s Food Guide”.

This magical guide will also outline what to eat, living with allergies, eating while pregnant and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. All of this information and more is available under the “Canada’s Food Guide” section of the Health Canada website.

Now if you are like me and don’t have the luxury of having the Internet while shopping at the grocery store, you can still eat just as healthy as all those rich kids with tennis courts in their backyards. You see, every packaged item has nutritional information printed on its packaging (it’s the law) and many healthy foods have a health check symbol to identify it.

Of course, there is no nutritional information on fresh foods like apples and celery, but you can pretty much guarantee that the closer the product is to its natural form, the healthier it is for you. In fact, celery burns more calories just by eating it than are in the celery itself, and cucumber helps speed up your metabolism!

Now that you know, be sure to check out Health Canada’s website for further information and I can guarantee whatever your size, your body will love you.

P.S. It is okay to eat ice cream every once in a while, in fact, I recommend it.
